Angelo State University's Cat Coalition(Please note:The program has recently been approved by the Angelo State University administraion! This site is strictly a mockup for the proposal and is not a live site. Concho Valley PAWS will maintain the information for the ASU Cat Coalition. Thank you, Kristin Stanley) Domestic cats that have never had any human contact are referred to as "feral." They have long been an issue on the Angelo State University campus. In the past, the administration periodically had the cats trapped and destroyed in an effort to eradicate them. This was only a temporary solution and did not resolve the problem. At the end of 2011, concerned ASU faculty, staff, and students, and leaders from Concho Valley Paws formed a coalition to care and control the feral cats by implementing a compassionate, effective solution known as TNRM: (trap, neuter, return, maintain). TNRM is innovative, non-lethal and effective. The ASU Cat Coalition is an all-volunteer organization and modeled after the University of Texas' "Campus Cat Coalition." Volunteers trap and transport adult cats to local program participating veterinarians where the cats are examined, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and ear tipped (for identification). The cats are brought back to campus and released into their home territory. Volunteers then feed and monitor them on a daily basis. Feral kittens under 6 weeks can be socialized. Volunteers catch them, socialize them, and place them for adoption. The purpose of the Angelo State University Cat Coalition is to reduce and stabilize the number of cats on ASU’s campus through a program of trapping, neutering, returning, and maintaining (TNRM).
